The issue is, it’s been so long since the last episode that the actors probably don’t have much of a rapport with each other these days. Nonetheless, a Friends reunion is being considered more and more every day.
The special was announced by Deadline, who insist that it will set HBO back a reported $20 million. Quite a lot of money, and it’s worth bearing in mind that this will be an unscripted show.
The show this will likely resemble most is the Inbetweeners Reunion that happened early in 2019, with many people intensely disappointed to learn upon switching it on that it wasn’t a brand new episode, but rather the cast talking about the old ones.
The whole main cast would be returning, with Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc (Joey), Matthew Perry (Chandler), and David Schwimmer (Ross) joined by series creators David Crane and Mara Kauffman.
This would coincide with the release of the highly anticipated streaming service, which won the rights to show episodes of Friends, having outbid Netflix in the process.
Robert Greenblatt, chairman, WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer, laid out the mission statement for the platform like this:
“HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform. HBO’s world-class programming leads the way, the quality of which will be the guiding principle for our new array of Max Originals, our exciting acquisitions, and the very best of the Warner Bros. libraries, starting with the phenomenon that is ‘Friends’.
“Under the leadership of two of the strongest creative visionaries — Casey Bloys (HBO) and Kevin Reilly (original content and acquisitions) — and two of the most experienced digital experts — Tony Goncalves and Andy Forssell — I have no doubt they and their dedicated teams will deliver the world’s best storytelling to audiences of all ages wherever and whenever they want it.“
Previous speaking on a potential reunion, Jennifer Anniston said:
“We would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.“
