Percy Jackson is being made into a TV series for Disney+ and it’s supposedly it’s going right back to the beginning. Sounds like a lot of fun, eh?

I recently started listening to the audiobook of Stephen Fry’s Mythos and it genuinely is bizarre that the world of Greek Gods hasn’t been covered more in cinema.

I suppose you’ve got things like Jason and the Argonauts, but after that, you’re left with utter fuckery like the terrible Clash of the Titans remake and the very passable Percy Jackson films. It’s good then that the latter is getting a second chance with a Percy Jackson series on Disney+.

Percy Jackson creator and writer Rick Riordan revealed the news in a video, saying:

After a lot of hard work and a lot of support from you guys, Percy Jackson is coming to Disney+. More later“.

Following that, he then wrote a statement saying:

Hey, Percy Jackson fans. For the past decade, you’ve worked hard to champion a faithful on-screen adaptation of Percy Jackson’s world. Some of you have even suggested it would be a great series for Disney+. We couldn’t agree more!

We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one.

Rest assured that Becky [his wife] and I will be involved in-person in every aspect of the show. There will be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods! It’s going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!

I watched the first film when it came out and it was a weird one. There were elements there of a good film – a sort of Greek god version of Harry Potter – but too much was going on and I could really get on with the very American setting and cast. It just seemed decidedly unGreek.

With that said, I have no idea what the books were like, so perhaps they’re faithful adaptations.

There’s no word on when this will happen, but we’ll keep you updated.
