She’s an Oscar-winning icon, but it turns out Anne Hathaway would much rather be called Annie.

Born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway, she told Jimmy Fallon this week that she wants everyone to call her ‘Annie’ moving forward.

It started when Jimmy asked how he should introduce her. “I’ve known you for a pretty long time now. I’ve heard people call you Annie, like your good friends,” Fallon said. “Do I call you Anne or Annie?”. “Call me Annie, everybody,” said Hathaway. “Everybody, call me Annie, please!” she insisted during her appearance over webcam.

She quickly said: “Can we talk about my name for a second?”

It all goes back to when she filmed her first commercial at the age of 14. She says she was asked what name she wanted on her Screen Actors Guild card. Without really thinking about it, Annie chose her birth name, not knowing it would stick around when she made it big. “That seemed like the right choice, but it never occurred to me that for the rest of my life, people would call me Anne,” she recalls.

We’ve all been there. Your mum shouts your full name, and that’s when you know you’re in trouble. “The only person that ever calls me Anne is my mother and she only does it when she’s really mad at me, like really mad,” she explains.  “So every time I step out in public and someone calls my name, I think they’re going to yell at me,” she admits.

“People are like “Anne!” and I’m like “what, what did I do?”, so please seriously, just feel free,” she continues. “People are so lovely, they don’t want to be presumptuous, and so I think they come up with workarounds on set. The truth is nobody’s comfortable calling me Anne, ever, it doesn’t fit, I’m an Annie… people call me Ms H and Hath…so feel free call me anything but Anne.”

Fallon says being called his full name, James Thomas, gives him the same feeling.  The pair laughed about how odd it would be if people called him that on the street.

Jimmy then called her Annie for the rest of the interview.

Lockdown Life

Hathaway also talked about her home life during the pandemic, with her two children. Talking about Jonathan, 4, and Jack, 1 that she shares with her husband, Adam Shulman she said: “It’s been a lot, but those are good ages to be home with your kids. Our 4-year-old believes everything we tell him, and that’s adorable as well as very useful.”

She said that 1 was a “magic” age, and how grateful she has been getting to stay at home with the kids.

Annie has also been sharing stunning photos of outfits she would have worn to movie premieres this year, were it not for lockdown.

Of course, she shot the pictures next to her pool, with the caption “fashion, but make it fashion.”

She was appearing on the show to promote her latest film, Locked Down, starring alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in the romantic comedy heist film.

Annie is certainly catchier than her Princess Diaries name: Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia.
