ASDA’s new Roddy the Reindeer chocolate cake is a new addition to the British supermarket for Christmas 2019; one that looks an awful lot like M&S’s popular Colin the Caterpillar, if you ask me. ASDA’s Roddy the Reindeer is a cylinder-shaped chocolate cake smothered in milk chocolate, icing and sweets and decorated to look like a friendly reindeer. Substitute the word ‘reindeer’ for ‘caterpillar’ in that last sentence and you’ve got M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar.
Christmas is an intense time for British supermarkets.
Not only is it the biggest shopping time of the year, but these days, they all need to compete with each for media attention, try to outdo each other with various social media stunts and battle it out to release the best blockbuster-style Christmas advert every year. Honestly, it’s like an annual list of Drag Race challenges for the likes of M&S, ASDA, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi every year.
Remember, when they just sold goods in exchange for money?
And in terms of the rivalries between them, it’s actually very similar to the queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race; it’s all fun, games and sisterhood, until someone steps a stiletto out of line – and then it’s handbags at dawn. I’m talking shade, side-eye and sabotage.
And If I were M&S I’d consider the release of Roddy the Reindeer as GAME ON.
Okay, so Roddy the reindeer isn’t an official rival to M&S’s legendary budget birthday cake, Colin the Caterpillar, but it’s pretty clear what ASDA is up to here… and if you ask me, it’s shady. And here’s where it gets shadier…
“Forget Rudolph, this Christmas another red button-nosed reindeer is set to bring magic to homes, and he comes in cake form and Good Housekeeping Magazine has pipped him as a new rival to Colin the Caterpillar.’
“Introducing Roddy the Reindeer, he’s made from chocolate and is heart-meltingly cute! He’s also available in a dairy and gluten free variant, making him everyone’s festive friend, and will be yours for just £6.
“His long chocolate sponge body is smothered in lip-lickingly delicious chocolate frosting and topped with little white fondant stars. Add an iced face with two cute ears, a smile and a dazzling red nose and he’s ready to steal the show at any festive occasion.”
ASDA has Roddy the Reindeer priced at £6 which is £1 cheaper than M&S’s Colin the Caterpillar.
All in all, Roddy is coming for Colin’s crown.
BUT, in turns out that Roddy isn’t the only queen… sorry, cake… coming for Colin’s crown. After a little digging, I discovered that other supermarkets have their own versions of Colin the Caterpillar. Tesco has a version called Curly the Caterpillar for £6, Sainsbury’s has Wiggles the Caterpillar for £6 and Aldi has Cuthbert the Caterpillar for £4.99.
The shade of it all.
Before I go… I can’t be in the only one tittering over the name Roddy, can I?
