You wait more than ten years for another Avatar film, and now two are nearly ready at once.
Director James Cameron has revealed that filming has finished for Avatar 2, and says that Avatar 3 is “95% done”.
He gave the news in a video chat with Arnold Schwarzenegger or all people, as part of the 2020 Austrian World Summit. Schwarzenegger previously starred in The Terminator, directed by Cameron.
It had already been confirmed by Disney that the sequels would be pushed back a year due to COVID with Avatar 2 set for December 16 2022 and Avatar 3 pencilled in for December 20 2024. There’s more to come though, with Avatar 4 to debut on December 18 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22 2028.
Talking to Arnold, James said: “COVID hit us like it hit everybody. We lost about four and a half months of production. As a result of that, we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already. Now that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver ‘Avatar 2,’ we’ll just start working on finishing ‘Avatar 3′. So where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting, we’re shooting the remainder of the live-action. We’ve got about 10% left to go. We’re 100% complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95% complete with Avatar 3.”
Filming has been taking place in New Zealand, a location that thas proved to be fortuitous, says James: “We’re very lucky in that we chose this as our production site years ago. We made the first film here in New Zealand and it turns out to be ranking first or second-best country in the world for its COVID response.”
He didn’t give away any details of the plot though, saying he prefers to keep some mystery and have a grand reveal.
