The trailer for season five of Charlie Brooker’s anthology series Black Mirror, set to air on Netflix, has just dropped.

Black Mirror has continued to up the ante season upon season.

Bandersnatch – the interactive episode following a video game developer – was pretty revolutionary when it dropped over the Christmas period, allowing viewers to make the decisions in order to determine how the film plays out.

For what it’s worth, I really enjoyed it, but the episode proved to be fairly polarising. Many bemoaned the fact they seemed to be going around in circles, while others complained about the very concept of an interactive episode and that viewing should be passive, but hey, you can’t please all the people all the time.

Information about the upcoming fifth season of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series has been scarce until recently, but Entertainment Weekly shared a first glimpse of the show with Anthony Mackie facing off with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

Speaking about the mysterious photo, Charlie Brooker said: “It’s the Marvel-DC crossover no one saw coming.”

And then out of nowhere, the trailer just dropped.

All of the actors – including Miley Cyrus – can be spotted in the trailer, which hints that the episodes will be tackling technology’s impact on marriage, self-esteem, fame, social media and mental health. The first look at the season reveals an Alexa-like doll from the future, a cell-phone induced assault and a VR escape for Cyrus.

“Love, privacy, connection, sex, family, work and afterlife” are the words that flash among the clips.

Ohhh, interesting.

Speaking about the new series, Brooker has said that it will offer fans a much more positive outlook on life – which marks a pretty drastic change from the bleak episodes we’re used to (although ‘Hang The DJ’ and ‘San Junipero’ are lovely eps).

Speaking to the New York Times, he said: “We’re doing more optimistic episodes and stories, rather than just dystopian and negative ones. We want to keep the show interesting for us.”

Furthermore, he’s said:

“I think it’s often easy for people to overlook the dark humour that is in Black Mirror.

“Certainly when the ideas come about, it’s an idea that makes me laugh. But then we play it really straight. Having said that, I’m proud to be a morose individual.”

The cast for season five includes Anthony Mackie, Miley Cyrus, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.

A release date has been officially confirmed too – you’ll be able to see brand new episodes from June 5th on Netflix.

I’m fully prepared to have my mind blown out of my skull. In fact, I’ll settle for nothing less.
