Boris Johnson orders the closure of all UK restaurants, pubs, bars and gyms in bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus

Clubs, leisure centres and theatres are also shutting their doors indefinitely.

Mr Johnson told all UK restaurants, pubs, bars, gyms, clubs, leisure centres and theatres to close indefinitely “as soon as they reasonably can” during this afternoon’s coronavirus news conference.

He said:

“Your sacrifice [by social distancing] means we are putting the country in a better and stronger position and we will be able to save thousands of lives.”

The PM urged Brits to resist going out this evening, saying:

“For now, at least physically, we need to keep people apart.”

“The more effectively we follow the advice we are given, the faster this country will stage both a medical and an economic recovery in full.”

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak is urging businesses across the nation to look at government support before choosing to spontaneously lay off employees.

He added:

“Today I can announce that in the first time of our history, the government is going to step in and help pay people’s wages.

“We’re setting up a new coronavirus job retention scheme. Any employer in the country small or large, charitable or non-profit, will be eligible for the scheme.

“Government grants will cover 80% of the salary of retained workers up to a total of £2,500 a month – that’s just above the median income.”
