In a video shared on Facebook by passenger Michelle Potts, Michael Bradley announced on the plane’s tannoy to his stunned fellow travellers that he would be saving the day.
I’d personally be more than a little concerned if some random guy just offered to fly a plane. That’s like me offering to drive a bus (because they’re ALWAYS late) when I’m literally only on my third driving lesson.
Admittedly, it’s a little less sensational when you find out he’s an off-duty pilot for the airline himself. I bet he gets free flights and all, and that’s why he’s flying with easyJet. Not that easyJet are a bad airline or anything, but who in their right mind goes to their place of work if they don’t HAVE to be there?!
Apparently his wife had punched him in the back of the head at 3am – because that’s a perfectly normal way to inform people about delayed flights – which led him to take his licence and ID to the airport with him. In the video, Michael explains to the passengers:
“I phoned up easyJet and said ‘Hiya, I’m standing in the terminal doing nothing. I have got my licence with me – deliberately from being punched in the back of the head at 3am – I have got my ID with me and I’d very much like to go on holiday and if you need a favour I’m standing here ready to go.“
“They said ‘we’ll phone you back’. Thirty-eight seconds later they phoned me back and said ‘please, please pretty please with a big cherry on top, can you fly the aeroplane to Alicante’?“
I mean, I guess as long as they asked nicely.
Travelling with his wife and young son, Michael was cheered by the passengers, no longer facing a dreaded two-hour delay.
Michelle, who was on the flight with her friend Jess Clayton, captioned the video:
“It could could only happen to me!! Get to the airport and our flight is delayed a couple of hours… then I happen to look at the original time and it changed to gate closing!! Had to leg it across the airport to get on the flight…“
“Get to boarding and asked the guy at the desk what’s going on he said ‘ oh your pilots gone missing but a guy that’s going on your flight is going to fly the plane ‘ REALLY CASUALLY!!!
Luckily the guy was actually a pilot!! probably would of been cancelled if it wasn’t for him! Legend.“
Michelle told Manchester Evening News:
“I was a bit nervous when I was first told, but once he told us on the plane I was just relieved that we weren’t going to be delayed.”
Ah, don’t we all love a happy ending. What I’m wondering is what happened to the ‘missing’ pilot? Hmm…
