Britain's most dangerous prisoner murdered four people in total, one in a psychiatric facility and two others after being sentenced to life in jail. Some have argued that Maudsley should never be released from solitary confinement because he remains a threat to the general public and his fellow inmates.
His request to interact with the 'regular population' in prison was denied by wardens last year because they deemed it too risky. Instead, Maudsley spends 23 hours a day in a bulletproof glass cell beneath the prison, with only a bare minimum of utilities and approximately 5.5 by 4.5 meters of room.
Due to the danger, he poses to the other inmates, he will remain locked up even on Christmas Day. Maudsley's cell was constructed specifically for him at His Majesty's Prison (HMP) Wakefield for ten years after he was convicted. HMP Wakefield is the UK's largest high-security prison for men in Category A.
Wakefield Prison has been called "Monster Mansion" because it has been home to rapists, murderers, and serial killers. It holds about 600 of the most dangerous people in the country, most of whom are sexoffenders or people serving life sentences. Meanwhile, Gavin, Maudsley's nephew, stated in a documentary series that aired earlier this year that his uncle was "happy and content" in prison but would kill again if he were released.

Maudsley has also been called the real "Hannibal the Cannibal" from the movie "Silence of the Lambs." This isn't just because of his glass cell and high IQ, but also because he allegedly ate the brain of one of his victims. Even though Maudsley has killed far fewer people than many of his fellow British serial killers, he is thought to be one of the worst because of how brutal his crimes are.
He Grew Up In A Catholic Orphanage In Liverpool
When Maudsley was just a kid, he and his two brothers and sister were taken away from their abusive parents. Child services placed Maudsley and his brothers in a Catholic orphanage in Liverpool, where they grew close to the nuns who were responsible for looking after them.
But after many years, Maudsley's parents went back to the orphanage and picked up their four kids, bringing them back to their house to join the other eight kids they'd had in the meantime. Physical violence allegedly started soon after Maudsley and his siblings moved back in with their parents. The authorities placed Maudsley in foster care a year later, when he was probably around 10 years old.
He Worked In The Sex Industry To Finance His Drug Addiction
They say that while Maudsley was in foster care, his father told his siblings that he had passed away. Years passed before Maudsley's siblings learned he was still alive. Maudsley ran away from his foster family at the age of 16 and made his way to London. Soon after moving to London, England's capital, Maudsley developed a drug habit and turned to sex work to support it.
He Did Not Engage In Cannibalism
For decades, particularly in British tabloids, it was said that Maudsley was a cannibal who had eaten part of the brain of his second murder victim, but this claim was never substantiated. It appears that Maudsley fell prey to media hyperbole when he was given the moniker "Hannibal the Cannibal." The second murder victim, David Francis, had no signs of cannibalism found in the autopsy report.
The Press Gazette says that in 2009, the British tabloid Daily Mail, which had first reported the cannibalization claim, added the following to their database and told major media outlets about the change. They said:
Although the media, especially the British tabloids, claimed for decades that Maudsley was a cannibal who ate part of his second murder victim’s brain, these statements are not supported by the evidence. It seems that Maudsley became a victim of media sensationalism when he was dubbed “Hannibal the Cannibal. ” The autopsy report on David Francis, the second murder victim, did not show evidence of cannibalism.
“„An article on Broadmoor of 24 November 2008 stated that, after Robert Maudsley and another patient [David Lant] had tortured and killed a pedophile in 1977, the 'man’s skull had been cracked open like a boiled egg, with part of the brain missing and a spoon hanging out of the cranium.' We have now been informed that the autopsy report into the death made clear that the “skull is intact and the brain shows no gross evidence of injury.- Press Gazette
Final Thoughts
In 1977, he planned to murder seven convicts at Wakefield Prison, but only ended up killing Salney Darwood and William Roberts. In a letter he penned in the year 2000, Maudsley pleaded with the legal system to let him die. He wrote:
“„What purpose is served by keeping me locked up 23 hours a day? Why even bother to feed me and to give me one hour’s exercise a day? Who actually am I a risk to? As a consequence of my current treatment and confinement, I feel that all I have to look forward to is indeed psychological breakdown, mental illness and probable suicide.- Robert Maudsley
He continued:
“„Why can’t I have a budgie instead of flies, cockroaches and spiders which I currently have. I promise to love it and not eat it? Why can’t I have a television in my cell to see the world and learn? Why can’t I have any musictapes and listen to beautiful classical music? If the Prison Service says no then I ask for a simple cyanide capsule which I shall willingly take and the problem of Robert John Maudsley can easily and swiftly be resolved.- Robert Maudsley
