His tragic death in August sent shockwaves across the industry, now Chadwick Boseman has received a posthumous Golden Globe award.

The Black Panther star was recognised for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which is on Netflix now. He died aged just 43 after a four-year battle with colon cancer.

His wife broke down in tears as she accepted his award.

Boseman won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama.

He beat Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father), Gary Oldman (Mank) and Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian). to

His widow, Simone Ledward said the actor would ‘thank his ancestors’.

Her speech then caused presenter Renée Zellweger and his Ma Rainey co-star Viola Davis to cry.

“He would thank God, he would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices,” as she became emotional.

She continued: “He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice that tells you can, that tells you the keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history,” she said.

She said Chadwick would have thanked his director, George C. Wolfe,  Denzel Washington, and Viola Davis. She also listed other co-stars Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, Taylour Paige, Dusan Brown.

Simone added: ‘And I don’t have his words but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love, so thank you HFPA for this opportunity to do exactly that.’

Marriage

The pair started dating in 2015, they married in secret shortly after getting engaged in October 2019. The marriage was only revealed in a statement from Boseman’s family after his tragic death.

Boseman played Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Green was the confident trumpeteer for Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) who is trying to break out on his own. His award-winning performance looks set to be winning all of the awards this season, but the competition is fierce.

All eyes will be on the forthcoming ceremonies over the next few months, as to whether he’ll receive any further honours.

He history earlier this month as the first actor to earn four SAG Awards nominations in the same year. He’s nominated for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Best Supporting Actor in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and Outstanding Ensemble nominations for both films.

Experts are also predicting he will receive his first-ever Oscar nomination.

What a talented actor he was.
