Cher shocked fans when she tweeted about how she feels she could have made a difference in the moments that led to George Floyd’s murder.

The murder of George Floyd shocked people across the world. In the wake of the incident, which saw Floyd unable to breathe as a police officer knelt on his neck, many were outraged.

Protests and calls for criminal charges for the officers followed the incident. While many celebrities offered their thoughts, fans have been surprised by Cher’s recent comments.

What did Cher say?

As an incredibly successful pop star and actress, Cher has a huge amount of followers. Many enjoy her content that revolves around new projects and causes she supports. However, her comments about the George Floyd incident concerned some.

The star wrote on Twitter:

“Was talking With Mom & She Said ‘I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd,& Cried,'”

“I Said ‘Mom,I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY, But.. I Kept Thinking …..Maybe If I’d Been There,…I Could’ve Helped.”

Many feel that this attitude is symptomatic of a white saviour. Furthermore, many are questioning why the star has put themself in the disturbing narrative.

The response

Many have taken to Twitter to respond to the comments of Cher.

One Twitter user replied:

“Um….Cher, I think you’re great and all, but this ain’t it. George Floyd’s murder isn’t about you. Don’t make it about you. And don’t inadvertently insult the traumatized witnesses who WERE there and did their damndest to save his life.”

“Oh yay another White person centering themselves around blk ppls pain. I wish I was there to stop you from tweeting this”

However, others defended the singer, stating:

“Why is anyone mad at Cher? Most ppl who saw it thinks or hopes they could’ve helped. That’s why so many of the witnesses cry on the stand. If Cher uses her celebrity to help thanks.”

Another fan noted:

“It’s the negative people for me. @cher is constantly helping all communities. More than most. So if a kind old lady wants to wish she was there to help. I don’t see the damn harm. Calm down.”

Despite the fans defending Cher, others explained why people were offended:

“They didn’t cancel her they are pointing out how tiresome it is for whites to use our horror as their hypothetical hero statement. It’s easy to say something like this but it actually changes nothing. Ppl are saying that to make themselves feel better. Work needed is hard.&if ppl”

Others just joked about the sentiment.

Going forward

Cher has yet to respond to the comments.

Many will hope that the singer is more considered when sharing anecdotes in future. Although this particular story has seemingly split fans.
