It's not your average anime with robots, swordplay, or completely illiterate young men and women. Death Note is even, an anime for intellectuals and people seeking mental stimulation rather than merely fighting or being eye candy (although Light Yagami, the main character, is eye candy on his own).

Death Note Synopsis

The world of humans is tainted by brutal murders, small-time thefts, and needless violence. The world of the death gods, on the other hand, is a mundane, unchangeable gambling den.
Both the cruel deity of death, Ryuk, and the brilliant 17-year-old Japanese student Light Yagami share the conviction that their worlds are corrupt. Ryuk releases his "Death Note" into the world of humans for his own enjoyment.
The first rule Light discovers is absurd. The person whose name is listed in this memo shall perish. Light tries to write the name of a criminal, which makes him think of his first crime in a disturbing way, but the temptation is too great.
Light, who goes by the nickname "Kira," is aware of the dreadful godlike power that has come into his possession. Light follows his cruel sense of justice with the goal of getting rid of all bad people in the world.
The meticulous and brilliant detective L is already on his trail, but as Light's intelligence surpasses L's, the massive manhunt for Kira devolves into a fierce intellectual conflict that can only be resolved by the execution of one of them.
Death Note also has some excellent animation in the opening and closing themes and scenes. The ones by Maximum the Hormone, however, are a little "loud," if you know you know. So, check out this list of Death Note top openings, endings, and covers.

"The World" English Cover By Jonathan

I made a promise for a change
A revolution in the night
Like a flower, dark and blooming
From my love
Not light!
I won't let them interfere
I won't allow them in my way
The world will know
The night will grow
It all begins...
Today!
I see the future and the fruit it brings...
This town forgot it's sense of reasoning
These ever-twisting days are blackening...
The dark... It starts to turn...
Into dreams!
Please tell me why!
Am I a savior, ment to save us all?
The people cry!
They want an end...
...A curtain call!
I made a promise for a change
A revolution in the night...
Like a flower, dark and blooming
From my love
Not light!
I won't let them interfere
I won't allow them in my way
The world will know
The night will grow
It all begins today!
Someday, somehow
I'll show the world, in time
Replace these clouds above...
With shining sky!
Please tell me why!
Am I a savior, meant to save us all?
The people cry!
They want an end...
...A curtain call!
I made a promise for a change
A revolution in the night...
Like a flower, dark and blooming
From my love
Not light!
I won't let them interfere
I won't allow them in my way
