It’s been an unusual week or so with social media and the President Donald Trump.
He was banned permanently from Twitter last Friday, after Twitter cited the ‘risk of further incitement of violence‘ after his supporters stormed the US Capitol.
Donald Trump Jr was an avid fan of the social media platform Parler, but that was removed too after Amazon withdrew their support.
Now the President’s son is calling on Elon Musk for help. He hopes Musk will create a platform that can “blow Twitter away” and save “free speech in America”. He accuses Twitter of “bias” and “one-way targeted” censorship of his father and their supporters.
A New Rival
His dream is for a rival social networking site to give Trump a new platform. He hopes for them to use “actual neutral arbiters and fact-checkers.”
In his Instagram video, he says he: “wanted to come up with something to deal with nonsense on the censorship that’s going on right now and obviously, targeted one way. Why doesn’t Elon Musk create a social media platform?
“This guy put manned people into space. He did so privately. He took on big government and did it better, cheaper, faster than they ever could. This is the guy to do it.”
He says he considers Elon Musk to be the right person for the task after he took on “West Coast high tech” for turning into the “de facto arbiter of free speech”.
“Someone like him has the brilliance to come up with something that blows Twitter away,” Don Jr added. He insists he doesn’t want it to become one sided though. “I am not looking for a conservative echo chamber, I want a platform to argue my ideas vs someone else’s and not just people in a place telling me what I want to hear.”
He pleads: “Elon why don’t you do that. Get out there and come up with a concept. I think you are literally the guy to save free speech in America.”
Criticism Of The Ban
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also expressed concerns over Trump’s ban from Twitter, a spokesperson confirmed this week. She has referred to the move as ‘problematic’.
The President told reporters on Tuesday that he considers the ban to be a “catastrophic mistake.”
Trump continued: “I’ve been predicting it for a long time but people didn’t act on it and I think big tech has made a terrible mistake and very, very bad for our country and that’s leading others to do the same thing. It causes a lot of problems and a lot of danger. Big mistake and they shouldn’t be doing it.”
As it stands, Elon Musk, who recently overtook Jeff Bezos as the richest man in the world, hasn’t responded to Don Jr’s call for help and has been busy posting memes about Baby Yoda instead.
Do you think Don Jr is right?
