When Coming To America was released in 1988 it became an immediate classic that showcased the comedic skills of Eddie Murphy. The long-awaited sequel is set to deliver a similar experience according to Murphy.

Eddie Murphy has seen a resurgence in recent years on the back of critically acclaimed films like Dolemite Is My Name. The star’s next big project look set to please fans as they revisit the classic Coming To America. In the sequel, aptly titled Coming 2 America, King Akeem Joffer will continue his adventures with a familiar set of friends.

The first set of images, shows the cast looking pretty similar to the way they did thirty-two years ago:

Both Arsenio Hall and Murphy still look the part, and it seems that the film will be similar to the original in the most important way. Eddie Murphy explained that the sequel will deliver in terms of quality:

“My favourite part of reuniting with the cast of Coming to America was making a movie that’s as good as the first one. Getting everybody together… and making a really great movie, that’s my favourite part.”

It is not only the cast that has reunited for this film. The sequel sees the return of writers Barry W Blaustein and David Sheffield. With this in mind, the tone between the movies should be consistent, although there are some new additions.

Stars like Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, Nomzamo Mbatha and Teyana Taylor will all add to the original cast in a film that some feel the world needs.

James Earl Jones, who has also resumed in his role as King Akeem’s father for the sequel, stated the importance of the new film when talking to PEOPLE:

“This is the perfect time to return to Zamunda because it’s been a while since we’ve had a great comedy that everybody can enjoy. Zamunda is a very funny place, and the world needs that right now.”

Coming 2 America will be released on Prime Video on March 5, 2021.
