Drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was once the most powerful drug lord in the world with a “narco princess” wife.
But the law caught up with him, and the drug lord is now serving life in a New York prison. His beauty-queen wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, has now been arrested in the US.
She is charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.
Police arrested El Chapo’s glamorous wife in Virginia. They have accused her of scheming to help orchestrate her husband’s July 2015 escape from Altiplano prison in Mexico.
Mike Vigil, a former DEA agent who worked undercover in Mexico, told DailyMail.com that Coronel was “a narco princess” deeply enmeshed in the world of trafficking.
‘El Chapo’s accomplice’
He said they will use Coronel to find other drug traffickers. They will press her on the whereabouts of El Chapo’s sons and his right-hand-man, Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada.
Vigil says police will try and “flip” Coronel to testify against high-ranking members of the cartel.
El Chapo’s lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, is representing Coronel.
According to court documents obtained by The New York Times, Coronel sent on messages for her husband. They say she aided him in shipping drugs from 2012 to 2014.
The escape plan saw Guzmán’s sons buy a property near the high-security Mexican prison. They smuggled a GPS watch to their father, which gave them his exact location in the prison.
In a Prison Break style getaway, diggers tunnelled into the prison. The drug lord escaped with a specially adapted small motorcycle through the tunnel.
Mexican police recaptured him after a shoot-out in 2016. They then extradited him to the US in 2017.
Former Sinaloa cartel capo Damaso Lopez Nuñez told a court Coronel had personally told him Guzman “was thinking of taking the risk of again escaping from prison and was wondering if I could help with that.”
Coronel sat unfazed through his headline trial in the States. The hearings went on for three month, and she attended almost every day. Some days she even wore matching outfits with her husband.
Her glamorous get-ups during the trail attracted media attention. Coronel announced afterwards that she was launching a fashion collection.
She watched on as prosecutors accused her husband of drugging and raping girls as young as 13 as well as carrying out the cold-blooded murders of former cartel members and rivals.
Coronel is a dual US-Mexico citizen. She wed Guzmán in 2007 and gave birth to their twin girls on August 15, 2011.
The pair reportedly first met at a dance when Coronel was 17 and Guzmán was 49.
She was a former beauty queen but has roots in trafficking operations.
Aispuro is the daughter of a cattle rancher, Inés Coronel Barreras, and Blanca Estela Aispuro Aispuro. But her father was also a mid-ranking lieutenant in the Sinaloa Cartel, as was her brother, Omar.
She said at the end of her husband’s trial: “I don’t know my husband as the person they are trying to show him as, but rather I admire him as the human being that I met, and the one that I married.”
Authorities have accused legendary drug lord El Chapo of making $14 billion during his career. He smuggled up to 200 tons of drugs across the US border in furtive ways so as to avoid detection.
This will make for a great series of Narcos…
