In the new film adaptation of Matilda The Musical, Emma Thompson is set to play the fearsome role of Miss Trunchbull.

The uplifting story of Matilda is one of a young, very intelligent girl (who can also move objects without touching them) born into a hateful family.

After debating with her vile family, Matilda starts school, where she runs into yet another hateful person – her headmistress, Miss Trunchbull.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for Matilda, as her form teacher, Miss Honey, takes a liking to her and they form a beautiful bond. Miss Honey finds out about Matilda’s gift for moving objects with her brain, and encourages her to use them in her favour. Fast forward to the end of the musical, *spoiler alert*, Miss Honey ends up adopting Matilda and they all live happily ever after.

Though Matilda’s parents are indeed frightening, Miss Trunchbull is perhaps the scariest character of all. Known for placing children in a spiked narrow chamber dubbed ‘The Chokey’ (which is definitely child abuse), Miss Trunchbull hates children – despite being a school headmistress.

Emma Thompson will undoubtedly bring the role to life in a way we have not seen before – just as long as she plays it more Nanny McPhee and less Karen from Love Actually (still haven’t forgiven Alan Rickman for the whole gold necklace scandal).

Netflix announced the actors who will be playing the main roles on Twitter.

They wrote:

*Alisha Weir as Matilda*

*Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull*

*Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey*

That’s magic. That’s MATILDA. Director Matthew Warchus’ musical adaptation, coming to Netflix.”

Lashana Lynch was confirmed to play Miss Honey earlier this year. Lynch has recently starred in No Time To Die, and it really looks like her career is going from strength to strength.

Alisha Weir, who will be playing the role of Matilda, is relatively new to the showbiz scene. At just 11 years old, Weir will be making her big break with this iconic Netflix remake of a well loved tale.

There is much excitement about the new film.

The director, Matthew Warchus said that “Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, Matilda, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars,”

Warchus, who was also the director of the Award-winning Broadway musical also said:  “I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world.”

Are you excited?
