Robert Downey Jr was very much considered a pioneer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) starting life as Tony Stark in Iron Man back in 2008.
Iron Man was the first film in the MCU franchise with RDJ, with the actor later reprising the role in Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War, before wrapping up in Avengers: Endgame.
It’s undeniable that RDJ slid into the role of Iron Man like a rubber glove which is why many Downey fans have continued to live on in hope of a classic comic book resurrection at some point in the not-so-distant future.
But in a recent interview on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, RDJ pretty much quashed all hopes stating he’s “all done” with his obligations to MCU, leaving many fans bereft on Twitter.
Final farewells have since flooded the platform as fans react to the revelation:
Coincidentally, in other trending news, the FBI are investigating reports of a man flying with a jet pack on not far from LAX airport in sight of two commercial planes.
Seemingly, there is nothing quite like the Marvel spirit in attempts to keep the dream alive as fans plead “let it be Iron Man”.
It’s disheartening news for most but some fans claim Endgame was the perfect way to see RDJ out as Tony Stark and wished him “a deserved retirement” with “much respect”.
Others simply couldn’t believe the news tweeting: “He said this in Iron Man 3”.
Of course, anything is possible with superheroes, so fans needn’t put the nail in the coffin just yet – at the right price Downey Jr may well feature again in some small way with MCU and let’s face it, he only said he was “all done” which could easily be taken out of context right?!
If Marvel did consider an Iron Man reboot, who could ever really fill RDJ’s boots?
