Because I’m an idiot though and incredibly self-destructive, I’ve cut out beef from my diet starting from this year and that means almost everything I love – in the way of highstreet food – is gone. Thank god then for the Greggs vegan steak bake.
Honestly they couldn’t have released this at a better time if I’m being completely selfish. I’ve not tried it yet, but I hold out a lot of hope for the vegan steak bake. Did I like the vegan sausage roll from Greggs? Not really, no. Do I like normal sausage rolls though? No. Not really.
Greggs released their vegan steak bake in the VIP event last night in Newcastle, having customers queue in the freezing cold to get their hands on one. Looking the the pictures, you’d think this was a queue for XOYO in Shoreditch or something (not worth the wait, by the way) but no, they just wanted a meatless pastry.
Customers were then presented their steak bakes in some sort of new iPhone-esque packaging and to be fair to Greggs, they really put a show on for this one.
Newcastle’s Chronicle Live was there to, well, chronicle the event as they interviewed Greggs fan Danni Deloncho, who told them:
“I just love Greggs and love to try anything new they do. I’m really excited.“
The vegan steak bake is made with the same puff pastry as its meaty alternative, but without an egg-glaze. On top of that, the meat has been substituted for Quorn, mixed with diced onions. Lastly is the meat-free gravy, which ties everything together.
Speaking of the new addition to the menu, Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said:
“Our Vegan Sausage Roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.
“The launch of our Vegan Steak Bake is another key milestone on our journey to become our customers’ favourite for food-on-the-go. We look forward to hearing the feedback.”
It’s gone down well, with one customer giving the pastry a 10/10, along with a 9.5/10 rating for how similar it is to the genuine steak bake.
As of today – 2nd January 2020 (weird) – you can find the vegan steak bake in 1,300 Greggs across the country. Come the 16th of January (my sister’s birthday if you need help remembering) they will be rolled out across 700 more shops.
You can find out if your local Greggs is included here.
