Sixteen-year-old Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg has only just been named TIME’s 2019 Person of the Year and yet, President Trump has already found time to mock her publicly on Twitter. Because nothing shows maturity and stable leadership like a grown man pointing at a young girl and laughing at her – well, the digital equivalent, anyway. Classy, Donald.
The US President wrote the following to his 67.5 million Twitter followers, in response to Greta’s new accolade:
“So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!”
I don’t need to say much here, do I?
I think it’s actually pretty sad that a grown man with arguably the world’s most important title feels the need to come for a 16-year-old girl like this. Greta Thunberg has been awarded TIME’s 2019 Person of the Year for quite literally trying to save the world, single-handedly. And while most of the world has been wholeheartedly congratulating her for this latest achievement, the President of the United States – who could save the world if he wanted to, let’s face it – has instead decided to shame her online. It’s pathetic.
And I’m clearly not the only one to think so, because Twitter has exploded in criticism against Trump’s tweet:
I’m thrilled to see that some social media users have reminded everyone that the FLOTUS Melania Trump actually has her own anti-bullying campaign called ‘Be Best’. And yet, she has a husband who isn’t afraid to single-out and criticise a young girl in front of millions upon millions of people. I guess “bullying’s” allowed if you’re important enough…
As much as it’s nice to see so many people coming to Greta’s defence, it’s moves like this that remind all of us, that this girl is resilient AF and can fight her own battles. Thunberg did not respond directly to Trump’s comment, but instead, changed her Twitter bio to own and mock his comments. She wrote:
“A teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.”
Greta Thunberg was named as TIME’s 2019 Person Of The Year yesterday (11th December), in a year that’s been huge for climate change activism, mostly fronted by her. With the likes of Extinction Rebellion taking over the headlines in the latter half of the year and people fighting back at the corporations and governments not doing enough to combat climate change, it’s no surprise that Greta Thunberg has gained one of the most prestigious titles of the year.
Very much the poster girl for a new generation of people who want better for the world, and a glimmer of hope in an otherwise industrious, capitalist and dying planet, Thunberg has captured the imaginations of the public in a way no-one would have thought possible. You can read more about Greta’s win here.
Congratulations on your win, Greta. Oh, and congratulations on being made TIME’s 2019 Person of the Year . That win, too.
