In a post that featured a rare photo of the child, who was wearing a red jumpsuit and had green and yellow hair, Grimes captioned the photo “Y C”, seemingly debuting the new name. She added that the child’s name is pronounced: “Why”.
Grimes also explained the meaning behind the name in the comments, saying that it represents “curiosity, the eternal question… and such”.

The change was made to comply with California law. Grimes and Musk had previously changed their son’s name from X Æ A-12 to X Æ A-Xii to comply with the state’s naming regulations. X’s name was initially spelled with the Romannumerals for 12, but was later changed to the letters “Xii”.
Grimes explained the reasoning behind X’s original name in a 2020 tweet, writing that “X” stood for the “unknowable variable”, “Æ” was the “elven spelling” of AI and/or love, and “A-12” was the precursor to her and Musk’s favorite aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird.
The couple welcomed their second child quietly last year, with the newsbeing revealed in a Vanity Fair article.
During an interview for the piece, Grimes hinted at the new arrival, saying: “Whatever is going on with family stuff, I just feel like kids need to stay out of it, and X is just out there. I mean, I think E is really seeing him as a protégé and bringing him to everything and stuff.… X is out there. His situation is like that.”
Grimes and Musk’s relationship has also been the subject of speculation, with the musician telling the New York Times last year that they were “semi-separated”. Following an interview in March in which Grimes referred to Musk as her boyfriend, the couple announced that they had broken up.
