The world woke up to the delightful news that 55-year-old John Wick actor Keanu Reeves had a girlfriend on Sunday (3rd November) morning.
This is the first time in decades that the Hollywood actor has gone public with a relationship. Prior to this, Reeves had been pretty tight-lipped about his love-life and even said that he was pretty lonely at one point, but this is the first sign that the 55-year-old actor appears to have found love. In 1999, he and his girlfriend Jennifer Syme sadly lost their baby in the last stages of her pregnancy, and even more devastatingly after that, Syme died in a car accident 18 months later.
Although it’s nice to see the guy happy after some hard times, I think it’s fair to say the story is bigger than it should be for all the wrong reasons. The internet is obsessed with the fact that the two are more or less the same age (despite Reeves’ girlfriend being 9 years younger than him). But, as with too many happenings in this world, the internet has made a huge deal out of nothing. In fact, earlier this week, this story was one of the highest-trending news stories on Twitter.
Reeves’ partner is 46-year-old Alexandra Grant. She joined Reeves at a Hollywood event over the weekend and the pair walked the red carpet hand-in-hand setting tongues a-wagging and soon enough, the internet ablaze. Most of the world was ecstatic to see Reeves happy and in love again, but as I said, an alarming number of social media users were obsessed that Grant was so close to Reeves’ age – as well as the fact that Grant had natural grey hair.
Some people were even convinced that because of Grant’s natural grey hair and facial features, she was actually 74-year-old British actress Dame Helen Mirren.
And because Mirren is a f*cking legend, she responded publicly in the most perfect way. When asked about the comparison, Mirren told Entertainment Tonight:
“I saw that. That was very flattering on me, you know, because she’s obviously lovely.
“I do know Keanu very well. He did a film with my husband and he is just the most adorable, lovely person.
“So she’s a lucky girl and I’m sure that he’s a lucky boy.”
What an absolutely perfect human being. So, to clarify: no, Helen Mirren and Keanu Reeves are not dating *eye rolls*.
Hollywood has definitely got a lot to answer for here. We assume that because a man is famous, therefore he must have a girlfriend decades his junior, because that’s what society expects from him. That’s b*llocks. We also assume that if anyone appears to age in any way, they are demoted the category of ‘old’ – that’s b*llocks, too. We all age, even celebrities.
These expectations need to stay in the dark ages where they belong and I applaud Keanu and Alexandra for going public with their relationship and facing this age-old beast head-on. I hope it inspires and empowers.
