Where has time gone? It’s so bad it’s good, and High School Musical has turned 15.

The movie debuted on the Disney Channel on Janurary 10, 2006.

It was made for TV but proved so popular several sequels were made that were screened in cinemas. The franchise launched the career of several of the cast.

How has life been for the East High School alums since they first appeared on our screens with ‘We’re All in This Together’?

It starred the likes of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and more.

Zac Efron

Without a doubt the most successful star of the lot, Zac Efron was Troy Bolton, the star of the basketball team who was torn between sport and music.

He reprised the role of Troy in two sequels, and ended up dating co-star Vanessa Hudgens until 2010.  He’s also starred in ‘Hairspray,’ ’17 Again,’ ‘The Lucky One’ and many more.

He went back to the musical roots for  ‘The Greatest Showman’ and surprised many when he played Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.’ In 2013, he went to rehab for substance abuse issues, and later broke his jaw and had his mouth wired shut after an accident at home.

He’s been dating Vanessa Valladares for a few months, after meeting her when she worked as a waitress.

Vanessa Hudgens

Sharing the spotlight with Zac was Vanessa Hudgens as Gabriella Montez, who was a new student at East High and joined the decathlon team.  Vanessa has had plenty of roles since,  including ‘Beastly’, ‘Sucker Punch’ and played Rizzo in ‘Grease Live!’ and Maureen in ‘Rent: Live’.

She also starred in ‘The Princess Switch’ movies for Netflix. As well as acting, she released two albums: 2006’s ‘V’ and 2008’s ‘Identified.’

Vanessa is going back to the musical roots as she’ll be starring in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of the Jonathan Larson musical ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’

Ashley Tisdale

Ashley Tisdale starred as mean girl and drama club president Sharpay Evans. In recent years, people have come to her character’s defence saying she wasn’t actually all that bad.

After the High School Musical sequels, Ashley starred in the straight-to-DVD film  ‘Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure’. She also played Maddie Fitzpatrick on ‘The Suite Life of Zack and Cody’ until 2008.  Ashley also had roles in ‘Scary Movie V’ and a few short lived tv series.
Tisdale also went down the music route, releasing three albums:  2007’s ‘Headstrong,’ 2009’s ‘Guilty Pleasure’ and 2019’s ‘Symptoms’.

She’s found more success as a voice actress. Ashley has voiced Candace Flynn in ‘Phineas and Ferb’  since 2007, as well as roles in ‘Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch’ and ‘Skylanders Academy.’ Ashley married musician Christopher French, they married in 2014 and are expecting their first child this year.

Lucas Grabeel

Lucas starred as Sharpay’s twin brother, Ryan Evans.  Following the HSM movies he appeared in ‘Milk’, ‘Smallville’ and ‘Switched at Birth’.  Like Ashley he’s also done well as a voice actor, with roles in ‘Family Guy’ and ‘Elena of Avalor’ and more. He released a few singles and also st up a production company which has now wrapped up.

Corbin Bleu

Corbin Bleu portrayed Troy’s friend and teammate Chad Danforth. He hasn’t yet starred in anything that has matched the success of High School Musical. Bleu released two albums and competed on the 17th season of ‘ Dancing With the Stars’ in late 2013.  He came second with partner Karina Smirnoff, ‘Glee’ star Amber Riley won.

Despite lacking success on the big screen, Corbin has found success on the stage. He has starred in Broadway productions of ‘In the Heights,’ ‘Godspell’ and ‘Kiss Me, Kate.’ He married actress Sasha Clements in 2016.
