I’m almost certain (I think I heard it somewhere) that the reason people started eating spicy food was to hide the taste of rotten meat, but now people are trying to trick themselves and each other that they’re big and brave because they ask for extra hot when they go to Nando’s.
It just stings your mouth! There isn’t a taste to spice, just a masking agent to bland chicken. “All food tastes so boring to me since I started getting into spicy food…” Come on now, p*ss off, would you? “Yeah holding things got really boring for me ever since I started grabbing nettles…”
I see no difference.
Anyway, in the everlasting war between British supermarkets (although it seems to be exclusively Iceland and Morrison’s), as they try to release progressively spicy variations on famous dishes, Iceland have upped the ante, releasing the UK’s spiciest chicken wings that can be bought in a supermarket.
And apparently you have to wear gloves to eat the damn things. Which is just a massive ballache if you ask me.
Putting these wings to the test, the presenters of the ‘Clifton Chilli Club’ channel on YouTube have described them as ‘instantly hot’, saying ‘they get you straight away’.
The channel’s description reads: “From product reviews to cooking with chilli, international adventures to growing tips, chilli eating contests to extreme challenges – this is your one stop shop for all things CHILLI!”

Coming in at over 720,000 on the Scoville scale, these chicken wings cost £3 for a pack and yeah, they look pretty spicy. I say that because there’s not a man or woman on this planet who can even claim to understand the Scoville scale. It just seems like something that suffers from more inflation than 1920s Germany.
The scale surely doesn’t need to go that high. Water’s probably 50,000. Make it a 1-100 at most. Start over. Life your life.
Iceland describe their newest chicken wings, saying:
“BEWARE: These chicken wings are not to be taken lightly, they are seriously hot and should only be consumed under adult supervision.
We would recommend having a pot of cooling yoghurt, a pint of milk, latex gloves, protective goggles and maybe even a fire extinguisher close to hand.”
I don’t know. Just eat food you like the taste of.
