It’s long been established now that the casting in the MCU is almost pitch-perfect. Robert Downy Jr isn’t good at being Tony Stark, he is Tony Stark. Along with that, Chris Evans is so made for the role of Steve Rogers that I’m not convinced that the actor isn’t actually a super soldier.
To be fair to him, it would be the ultimate cover. Who would suspect that the man playing a guy with superpowers actually has superpowers?
That’s neither here nor there, though. Whilst I would love to see Chris Evans play Cap until the cows came home, he pretty heavily hinted that his next outing in Avengers 4 would be his last, tweeting:
Pretty sad but them’s the breaks, I suppose. Evans has stated that he’d like to move into directing and more thought-provoking film, but him leaving the MCU is a hard pill to swallow.
With that said, he did later clear things up by saying that he wasn’t necessarily leaving Marvel, telling Hollywood Reporter:
“I should clarify that I know I did tweet something that made a lot of people think that it was in some way a spoiler.
I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing. That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.
You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.”
It still feels like the end of the road for him though.
It’s long been whispered that one of Bucky or Falcon would take the mantel of Captain America in the films – once Steve Rogers maybe dies – as they did in the comics at some point each, and while the thought of that sort of softened the blow that we won’t have Evans forever, something seemed a bit off about it.
The Winter Soldier is great as The Winter Soldier, and whilst Falcon is good at flying and punching, he’s not exactly super-powered.
But what if they outright replaced Captain America? Recast him or introduced a different version of him from a different universe? Someone like, say, John Cena?
I know, it seems like a weird choice out of the left-field, but Cena himself hinted massively at the prospect of him taking the mantle as he posted an image of Cap’s famous shield – with Black Panther scratches on it – to his Instagram with no caption…

I mean, as far as hints go, that’s the iceberg that took down the Titanic…
The famous wrestler is no stranger to the world of acting, as he’s been landing more and more small roles, but now maybe it’s time that he stepped up into something a bit more big time?
One of the things that makes Chris Evans the perfect Captain America is that even in the real world, his moral compass is out of this world; he seems like a genuinely fantastic guy who resents evil. Similarly, John Cena is always being lovely in public. The amount of sick children he’s visited has to be some kind of world record.
I can’t speak for his acting chops, really. He seems fine, but as far as re-castings go, I’d say Cena is a pretty strong one… even if we will all miss Evans’ beautiful face.
God he’s so handsome.
