It turns out that Ordinary People singer John Legend isn’t so ordinary after all, as the 40-year-old singer has been crowned the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ of 2019 by People magazine.
John Legend joins the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt as the 34th man to receive the title from the publication.
Who was the first man to hold the title? A 29-year-old Mel Gibson back in 1985.
Legend – who has already won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony (he’s 1/15 EGOT winners in the world) – was extremely surprised to be crowned Sexiest Man Alive, especially following Idris Elba who took the title last year.
“I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” the entertainer tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!” – John Legend in conversation with People
The All of Me singer even tweeted a throwback picture of himself pictured back in 1995 alongside a picture of Idris Elba pulling at his barely-there jumper to express his disbelief about being dubbed the sexiest man in the world.
Previous winner Elba congratulated Legend on Twitter, telling the singer “you deserve it”. He jokingly added: “DO NOT TELL @TheRock He still thinks he’s got the title, I didn’t have the heart to tell him when I took it.”
In his cover interview with People magazine, Legend spoke about how his father’s kind nature and moral codes inspired him to be the humble respectable person that we know and love today.
“My father taught me about character. He taught us by example. He always conducted himself with such grace and dignity,” he says. “My parents always taught me that if you’re going to succeed in life, part of success is having humility. It’s a good way to live life, treating other people the way you want to be treated.” – John Legend in conversation with People
But enough about John, what everyone really wants to know is how does his wind-up merchant wife Chrissy Teigen has reacted to the news about her husband being crowned ‘Sexiest Man Alive’. I’ll let her series of tweets (that can be found below) do the talking:
I mean, just look at that caption. LOL.
(Yes, of course I follow her.)
If these two aren’t your idea of relationship goals then bro/sis, you’re doing life wrong.
Name a better couple.
Not just your average Joe, Lord Joseph William Furness – lorded by a mate for his birthday (a decision they now live to regret) – struggles to understand a world in which everyone isn’t as blunt, unemotional and sarcastic as him. His mother calls him pretentious because of his materialistic nature; whilst his father tells him that he can’t live in his own ‘dream world’ forever, but he seems to be doing pretty well so far.
