Johnny Depp will still receive his full £16 million salary for Fantastic Beasts 3, despite resigning.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has agreed to pay Depp after asking him to resign. The decision comes after years of problems came to a head in a libel trial against The Sun.
After he lost the trial, Warner Bros. asked Johnny to resign. Depp wrote on Instagram: “I have respected and agreed to that request,”
Mads Mikkelsen replaces Johnny in the role of Grindelwald in the third instalment of the series.
The Hollywood Reporter previously wrote that Depp was still getting his full salary, but the amount was unknown. His contract did not contain a morality clause.
Depp had only shot one scene of Fantastic Beasts 3 when he was asked to step down.
His role in the film was problematic since the first rumours of abuse from Heard came out. Speaking Entertainment Weekly in 2017 to Director David Yates said: “Honestly, there’s an issue at the moment where there’s a lot of people being accused of things, they’re being accused by multiple victims, and it’s compelling and frightening,”
“With Johnny, it seems to me there was one person who took a pop at him and claimed something. I can only tell you about the man I see every day: He’s full of decency and kindness, and that’s all I see. Whatever accusation was out there doesn’t tally with the kind of human being I’ve been working with.”
J.K. Rowling also gave her support to Depp in 2017: “For me personally, the inability to speak openly to fans about this issue has been difficult, frustrating and at times painful,”
She adds: “However, the agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected. Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.”
Depp vows to appeal against the U.K. ruling. He wrote on Instagram: “My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.”
