Kanye West has revealed that it was in fact God who told him interrupt Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 VMA’s and not some sort of inflated hubris as we all suspected at first.
As she was accepting her award for Best Female Music Video at the age of 19, Swift was interrupted by Kanye West, who ran onto the stage and started berating the ceremony for not awarding Beyoncé instead.
Taking the mic, he shouted:
“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!“
It was a bizarre moment and no-one could quite believe it, and eleven years on, it still gets brought up quite a lot.
Speaking with Nick Cannon on the Cannon Class podcast, West spoke about the motives behind his act, saying:
“If God didn’t want me to run on stage and say, ‘Beyoncé had the best video,’ he wouldn’t have sat me in the front row. I would’ve been sitting in the back. He wouldn’t have made it the first award.
“And [He] wouldn’t have made it so ridiculous of an idea ’cause I had never heard of this person before that night. And Single Ladies is like one of the greatest videos of all time… And I was only drinking Hennessy because I didn’t want to go to the awards show ’cause it was a set-up!“
Seven years after the incident, West showed that the feud between he and Taylor was still very much present, singing – or rather rapping – “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b*tch famous (God damn). I made that b*tch famous“.
And to think, all of this was God’s doing….
