A trip to KFC left a woman feeling ‘disgusted and ‘discriminated’ against after she was told there were no meat-free meals available.
Vanessa Hensley visited the Sidwell Street branch in Exeter last week, when she was disappointed. She was told by staff that there were no vegan or vegetarian options left. Vanessa says she has not had any trouble ordering in the past.
Hensley is a pescatarian. She says she only eats fish, so was hoping she would be able to get KFC’s vegetarian or vegan burger, or perhaps a veggie rice box as a late dinner.
Her partner went up to order, however the couple were shocked after they were told by staff there were no meat-free options at all – leaving Vanessa unable to eat anything at all.
She told Devon Live: “We were all going to treat ourselves as a household to a family bargain bucket and also a vegetarian meal for myself.
“When my partner got to the till to order they said, unfortunately, we haven’t got any vegan or vegetarian options on the menu anymore – I thought that was absolutely disgraceful.
“They didn’t say a reason why – they were quite rude to my partner.
“I think it’s disgusting because there are more and more people becoming vegan and vegetarian these days.
“We both left and said we’ll go elsewhere for food – my partner said it’s not fair so we ended up having fish and chips.”
Vanessa claims she was made to feel ‘angered’ and ‘upset’ by the experience and being left out. She insists she won’t be returning to KFC anytime soon.
In response to Vanessa’s claim, a spokesperson for KFC said: “We never want our fans to leave feeling disappointed!
“It’s always amazing to see how popular our Original Recipe Vegan Burger is, but due to less demand from people out and about at the start of this year, and our focus on running our restaurants responsibly with smaller teams, we prioritised the vegan burger in areas where it was a massive hit.
“We’re sorry this guest wasn’t able to get their hands on one.”
With any luck, Vanessa will be able to go to Burger King instead. The chain has revealed they’re releasing a vegan chicken burger soon.
The chain’s UK CEO Alasdair Murdoch, says a new plant-based Whopper will be coming to their menu. That’s in addition to a plant-based version of their chicken ‘Royale’ burger. Meat-free nuggets are also on the way too, he added.
Burger King made a plant-based Whopper last year but it was removed from menus due to pandemic restrictions.
Murdoch says that within a decade, up to 50 per cent of Burger King UK’s menu could be plant-based. “Over time the amount of beef that we are selling as a proportion of our total sales is reducing,”
McDonald’s has also signed a three year deal with Beyond Meat, to create new vegan products.
Are you surprised that this was the case for KFC or do you think she needs to get over it?
