Love Island star Zara McDermott has revealed she was suicidal after being blamed for revenge porn when she was just 14 years old.

The 24 year-old appeared on Series 4 of Love Island. Now, she has spoken out about her previous experiences of revenge porn.

When she was just 14, Zara was pressured into sending a picture of herself to a boy at her school. He said if she sent him the photo, it would: “make me like you more”.

After Zara sent him the picture, the boy then shared the naked photo of her with others.

The photo was circulated around the entire school, as well as neighbouring schools. It reportedly even reached Dermott’s brother.

Following the leak of the photo, Zara was called into the headteacher’s office and subsequently suspended.

Speaking about the incident, Zara said:

“My teachers just washed their hands of me. Drilling it into me, constantly blaming me. Do you know what that does to a young girl?”

Riddled with embarrassment, Zara said she thought about taking her own life. She said that she remembers thinking about how she would do it.  Further, Zara said: “I never want to go to that place again.”

Speaking about why she sent the photo initially, Zara said: “I honestly thought that if I took the picture, it would make him like me, and want to be with me, and I saw it as a way to prove myself to him”, according to The Sun.

More Revenge Porn

Sadly, this was not the only time that the Love Island star was a victim of revenge porn. In 2018, her ex boyfriend shared images of her online.

Speaking about this second instance of revenge porn, Zara said: “Notably, when I came out of Love Island, and came out to images of me, what felt like, circulating around the whole world. It was one of the hardest things I went through in my whole life.”

Now, Zara is part of a new BBC documentary about revenge porn. It will give a detailed account of her experience with revenge porn, in order to ‘bring awareness to this issue’.

The documentary will air on Tuesday 23 February.

Zara announced the news about the documentary on instagram. She wrote:

“Hi Everyone. Some of you may be aware that I have been a victim of Image Based Sexual Abuse, which is also known as Revenge Porn.

“For those of you who don’t know what this is, it’s basically when one person shares intimate images of videos of another person without their consent…

“I am really humbled and honoured to announce that the BBC and I are currently making a documentary to share my story.

“My main aim is to bring awareness to this issue, and be a voice for those who have suffered in silence and to help make a change. I am sharing my story and being my most vulnerable, emotional and raw.”
