The rumour mill had been swirling about who could possibly replace Johnny Depp after he was asked to step down from the role of Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts.

It’s been confirmed today that everyone’s favourite villain, Mads Mikkelsen, has signed up for the role.

The Rogue One and Hannibal star will be perfect for playing the evil wizard, and fans are already excited.

There was no time to waste for Warner Bros. in casting a replacement, as the third film is already in production.

As well as Mads, another fan favourite was Colin Farrell. It would have made sense as – spoiler alert – he already played Grindelwald when he was in disguise, in the first film in 2016, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

It wasn’t to be though, as he’s currently filming The Batman in the role of The Penguin.

Still, his changing appearances and disguises make it easier to explain why there’s now a new face in the role.

Depp himself influenced the appearance of the character, suggesting they give him deathly pale skin, platinum blond hair, a subtle moustache, and one “odd scary eye.” We’ll have to wait and see if Mads will sport the same look.

The third film in the franchise has been pushed back to July 15, 2022 and the cast including Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller are all set to return.

Not much is known about the plot yet, besides largely taking place in Rio de Janeiro, leading up to their involvement with World War II.

Do you think Mads is right for the role?
