The show follows FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches. Along the way, the agents pioneer the development of modern serial-killer profiling.
This season, amongst other things, focuses heavily on the Charles Manson Family who were responsible for the death of actor Sharon Tate, as well as a few others, which also seems to be one of the driving plots of Quentin Tarantino’s Once upon a Time in Hollywood.
David Berkowitz, aka the Son of Sam, also shows up as well as the BTK Killer. Along with that, Ford and Tench will dissect the Atlanta Child Murders, where 28 people – most of whom were black children – were killed in Atlanta from 1979-1981.
Not giving much away, the synopsis for the series reads:
“FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench probe further into the psyches of those who have done the unthinkable. With help from psychologist Wendy Carr, they apply their groundbreaking behavioural analysis to hunting notorious serial killers.”
It is pretty terrifying to think that all of these things really happened, with the depravity and inhuman acts of unthinkable terror genuinely manifesting themselves in the minds of these killers.
Last season delved into the cases of Ed Kemper, Montie Rissell, Jerry Brudos and Richard Speck, sending shivers down the spines of all who watched, and these season appears to be much the same.
Speaking on The Treatment podcast, producer and director for some of the episodes, David Fincher, said:
“We really wanted to drive a stake through the heart of the idea of the serial killer as this glorified comic book super villain.”
I’ve got to say, they do that pretty perfectly. The tone of a Spider-Man film would be entirely different if he was coming up against Charles Manson.
Interestingly, Fincher also opened up to Billboard about the music choices for the second season, stating:
“We’re looking at the Atlanta child murders, so we’ll have a lot more African-American music which will be nice.
“The music will evolve. It’s intended to support what’s happening with the show and for the show to evolve radically between seasons.“
As a little bit of background to one of this season’s antagonists, David Berkowitz, also known as Son of Sam – or the .44 calibre killer – was known for killing six people and injuring a further seven with a gun between July of 1976 and July 1977. Terrorising the city of New York, Berkowitz also claimed the have stabbed two women to death on Christmas eve on 1965.
