It was a big day for Disney fans yesterday, because the news of new films and programmes just kept coming.
Two princesses are getting spinoffs of their own, Moana as well as Princess and The Frog‘s Tiana.
Princess Tiana’s show has been described as “a long-form musical comedy series”. Simply called Tiana, it arrives on Disney+ in 2022 so there’s a while to wait yet! The show will feature her stepping into the role of a princess of a new country. It’s also a chance to see more of the beautifully animated New Orleans seen in The Princess and the Frog.
Moana’s “boundless sense of adventure and skills at wayfinding take her far beyond the reef, inspired by the oral storytelling traditions of the pacific islands.” The princess and her sidekicks HeiHei and Pua were hugely popular so fans are excited about this. Moana will arrive in 2023.
The Princess & The Frog was a stand-out film for many, as Princess Tiana is the first black Disney princess. The film came out in 2009 to rave reviews, and became Disney’s most successful traditionally animated film since Lilo & Stitch in 2002. It also received three Oscar nominations. Because of the popularity of the film, the Splash Mountain ride at Disneyland and Disneyworld is transforming into a Princess and The Frog theme soon too.
Moana made more than $690 million worldwide in 2016. The film received two Oscar nods, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for How Far I’ll Go. Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame is the man behind the songs – which explains why they’re so catchy!
They’re not the only ones getting spin-offs, there’s going to be a Baymax show too. The adorable cuddly star of Big Hero 6 will debut in 2022, plus a series about the animals of Zootopia called Zootopia Plus.
Fans are thrilled.
