Beards are here to stay as the facial hair trend shows no sign of waning. So what can you do if you still want to stand out from the crowd but don’t want to go barefaced? Say hello to the monkey tail beard.
Maybe it’s the pandemic making everyone go a bit chaotic. First, it was sea shanties, now it’s facial follicle art.
As the name would suggest, the beard is groomed and shaved into shape. It looks exactly as the name might suggest.
Bushy beards are so 2020. The monkey tail beard is shaped to look like a tail is curling around the wearer’s face.
If you’re dying to try this look yourself, start off with a sideburn. The beard then needs to be curving under the chin and then around the lip, finishing with a moustache. It’s definitely a bold look.
The man above is a trendsetter. Basebell player Mike Fiers decided to shave his beard in this style to amuse his teammates, and to be honest, they didn’t think he’d go through with it. He was way ahead of the curve though as he wore this in September 2019. He explained: “They dared me to do it. They didn’t think I’d go out there and pitch with it. I didn’t care.”
It’s definitely not a look for those who like symmetry, as one cheek is shaved. I guess it’s fun turning side to side to confuse people as to whether you have a beard or a moustache.
Some wearers are going above and beyond with bright colours too.
Let’s face it, most beard-wearers have definitely shaved a few funny shapes in the mirror in their time. A goatee, a soul patch, a Charlie Chaplin ‘tasch, a Game Of Thrones style braid. Maybe even a full handlebar moustache. You do you! Whatever makes you happy. Half the fun of fashion is self-expression, and in a lockdown for the pandemic, minimal people need to see it.
It would certainly be a conversation starter for your next Zoom call, and if they don’t like it just claim it was a filter. Problem solved.
Yes Or No?
The trend is already making waves on social media, but do you agree it’s a look? Could monkey tail beards be the new man bun? People seem to love and hate it in equal measure.
What do you think? Would you try a monkey tail beard or another trend?
