Exciting news for vegans and veggies, Nando’s are adding plant-based chicken to their menus from tomorrow (October 13th).
The chain confirmed the news today, stating that the new addition is made from pea-protein and is animal-free.
It will come with Nando’s Vegan PERi-naise, and the plant-based chicken is called The Great Imitator. Nando’s say it ‘was crafted to taste just like its signature PERi-PERi chicken breast fillet’.
PETA says the option is ‘an excellent choice for vegans’ as ‘all the ingredients in the burger and pitta versions are completely animal-free – right down to the mayo.’ However, many vegans have concerns about cross-contamination after it was confirmed that the new option will be cooked on the same grills as the chicken.
PETA continued: ‘PETA is delighted to have played a part in Nando’s journey to putting this delicious plant-based chicken on the table. Nando’s can’t guarantee zero risk of cross-contamination, so it’s not calling it vegan, but as all the ingredients in the burger and pitta versions are completely animal-free – right down to the mayo – we say these are an excellent choice for vegans, vegetarians, meat-reducers, and chickens. Cluck yes.’
Many people on twitter aren’t happy about the same grills being used.
Another big name said to be considering a vegan option is McDonald’s, with rumours swirling about a new Beyond Meat burger possibly being added to the menu.
McDonald’s haven’t officially confirmed the news yet, but watch this space.
