Remember Ned? No, not that one, Ned Umber? Well if Game of Thrones’ long hiatus means that you’re getting a little forgetful, one thing is for sure, you’ll remember him after watching the opening episode of season eight.
Ned became the Lord of House Umber after his family died fighting Jon Snow in the Battle of the Bastards. The 10-year-old’s predecessors had betrayed the Starks by fighting for the Boltons, but Ned pledged allegiance to the Starks once again after Jon Snow returned to Winterfell.
At the start of the episode Ned decides to head back to Last Hearth, the settlement where House Umber is based, to collect some horses. It doesn’t seem like he had the best trip home, as when we see him at then end of the episode Tormund and Beric Dondarrion find him like this.
A dead Ned Umber impaled against the wall surrounded by cut off limbs is pretty sad and all that, but this is Game of Thrones and the creepiest moment was still to come.
Tormund turns his back on Ned to talk to the others, Ned’s eye open, and after a brief pause he lets out a very tormented scream. It was a very well executed jump scare that quite frankly scared the hell out of me.
They set fire to the shrieking Ned and we were left with this visual, which quite a few people seem to think looks like a Targaryen sigil.
Most of us, though, were just straight up terrified…
Oh, and there was this too kind of reaction too. Sums it up really…nobody asked for this!!
What did you think to the opening episode of season eight? Let us know in the comments.
I was seven and had just given a hopeless answer to my teacher's question. The whole class was watching on. "Michael" he sighed, disdain dripping from the rims of his glasses, "the way you've approached this subject"...a long pause...another sigh..."you'll never amount to anything"And he was right. I was always terrible at science. Mr Joseph was the wisest of my teachers.Follow
