Warner Bros. has confirmed the UK release date for the next Wonder Woman film – get your diaries ready – December 16th.

It’s causing some controversy though, as it won’t be streamed in the UK, it’s going to cinemas only.

The new tiers of restrictions due to the pandemic are expected to be announced tomorrow, and fans are cross that the US is getting Wonder Woman 1984 to stream on HBO Max.

They’re hoping that Warner Bros will reconsider, especially as most large chains like Cineworld confirmed they’re remaining closed well into next year.

Of course, watching a new release on the big screen is exciting, but many people are still uncomfortable about the idea of returning to cinemas just yet.

Rumours are swirling that a streamed release may still happen, if the tiers tomorrow mean that many screens will remain closed if in a tier 3 area.

The new movie will see Gal Gadot’s warrior hero in the 1980s (the fashion and the music is going to be incredible) and facing off against the likes of Max Lord (played by Pedro Pascal of Game Of Thrones and The Mandalorian), Cheetah (played by Kristen Wiig). That’s not all, she’s also up against the return of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine.)

The long-awaited sequel is directed by Patty Jenkins.

It was confirmed the film will receive a staggered release across the US. It will begin with streaming on HBO Max and in cinemas where possible on December 16, with the intention to open in more cinemas on Christmas Day – although half of the cinemas across the United States are currently closed.

Wonder Woman 1984 was initially meant to be in cinemas in June, then August, October, and finally December.

Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chairman said: “Patty is an exceptional filmmaker and with Wonder Woman 1984 she has delivered an incredibly dynamic film that moviegoers of all ages around the world will absolutely love. We’re very proud of the film and look forward to bringing it to audiences for the holidays.”

Jenkins continued: “First and foremost let me say how much Gal and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for ‘WW84’ couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie.”

The director added: “Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer. With the new date on Christmas Day, we can’t wait to spend the holidays with you!”

Will you be going to the cinema to see it or hoping it streams?
