Last we month, we reported – with fervent glee, I might add – that Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage (who once went to a pub in Somerset for NYE and bought everyone a pint, FYI) was rumoured to be starring as himself in a film about himself. Well, I’m ecstatic to confirm that not only are the rumours true, but the film now has a title and a release date.
The concept is so outrageously meta and so Cage that we just want to give it five stars right now. Seriously, whack our review on the ads RN.
We have Tom Gormican (Ghosted, That Awkward Moment) and Kevin Etten (Ghosted, Workaholics) to thank for the birth of this new project, in which Cage will star as a hyped-up, manic version of himself. One word: stretch.
Originally, the concept sounded so nuts, we put it down to nothing more than clickbait nonsense; turns out we were totally wrong and we couldn’t be happier about that, ’cause it sounds like a f**king treat.
Reportedly, Lionsgate are now behind the project and have confirmed that the Nicolas Cage flick starring Nicolas Cage as Nicolas Cage will arrive in cinemas 19th March, 2021.
The film will be called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (naturally). According to The Hollywood Reporter, this is what the plot looks like:
“Cage, if deals close, would star as actor Nicolas Cage. The character is desperate to get a role in a new Tarantino movie while also dealing with a strained relationship with his teenage daughter. He also occasionally talks to an egotistical 1990s version of himself who rides him for making too many crappy movies and for not being a star anymore.
“The Cage character is also under a mountain of debt and finds himself forced to make an appearance at the birthday party of a Mexican billionaire who happens to be a fan of Cage’s work and secretly hopes to show him a script on which he’s been working.
“While he bonds with the man, Cage is informed by the CIA that the billionaire is actually a drug cartel kingpin who has kidnapped the daughter of a Mexican presidential nominee, and is recruited by the U.S. government to get intelligence. The situation spirals even more dramatically when the Mexican brings over Cage’s daughter and his ex-wife for a reconciliation, and when their lives are on the line, Cage takes on the role of a lifetime.”
If this is indeed true, Cage will be playing a damaged Cage turned real-life action hero. SO here for it.
Anyone else kind of hoping it’s a Christmas film, on top of all of that? Watch out, Die Hard.
Bless, Cage. He does like to keep us on our toes, doesn’t he? I doubt even the most radical of Nicolas Cage fans anticipated this meta-fest was ever brewing.
In other Nicolas Cage news – I know you’re thirsty for more – Disney is rumoured to be working on another National Treasure film, which could see Cage return to his iconic role of amateur cryptologist Benjamin Franklin Gates for the third time.
Nothing confirmed as of yet, but now The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent has proven that truly anything is possible in Hollywood, we’re feeling confident.
Just no more Ghost Rider, yeah, Nic?
