A fire has sadly broken out at the famous Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, and is rapidly spreading throughout the building.

The fire broke out earlier this afternoon, and although it is not yet known what the cause is, some officials have suggested that it could be related to renovations that are currently happening on the building. Firefighters are at the scene working to put the blaze out.

The most recent footage shows the spire collapsing and it now appears that the roof may also have collapsed.

According to Bloomberg, a cathedral spokesman has said that the entire wooden interior of the building is burning, and is likely to be destroyed.

Social media is full of images showing smoke coming out from the famous gothic building, which is 850 years old.

At the time of writing, police say that no fatalities have been reported, and they have no reason to believe that the fire is not accidental.
