Not Cillian Murphy – he’s distinctively average looking and below average height in real life – but actual Tommy Shelby.
Birmingham’s prodigal son could charm the skin off a snake and I’d love nothing more than to flex my muscles as the Don of the Peaky Blinders while wearing a flat cap and a nice three-piece suit.
In all likelihood I’ll probably never get that opportunity, but there’s still a chance in the virtual world thanks to a Peaky Blinders video game that’s on the way.
News first arrived of a spin-off game last year, which was due to come out in 2020 on console and PC by developers Endemol, in partnership with Curve Digital and FuturLab.
At the time, the game was described as a “narrative action game inspired by the critically acclaimed, epic gangster drama”.
And hey, we’ve got our first look.
In an exclusive reveal, IGN has announced that Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is a top-down puzzle game headed to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch through which you can take control of six members of the Shelby family at once.
Each member of the family comes equipped with their own unique skills that will be useful for making your way through the game’s various levels, and a rewind feature allows players to scroll back and forth through levels to guide each character past obstacles.
Tommy’s useful talent is that he’s threatening, while Arthur is an expert at both brawling and kicking down doors.
Speaking about the game, director James Marsden told IGN:
“There’s a point in the show where Tommy Shelby explains he has no concern for the past, nor the future. All he cares about is a crucial moment he calls the soldier’s minute.
We designed our game around that idea, allowing the player to plan actions backward and forward in time, choreographing an ensemble cast of characters to synchronise their actions during these crucial moments.
The player gets to feel like the smart and sophisticated leader that Tommy is, so we think becoming the mastermind will resonate with fans of the show and gamers alike.”
Peaky Blinders: Mastermind has been made in collaboration with the show’s creator Steven Knight, and the game’s story will act as a prequel to the first season.
2020 somehow just got a bit better.
