With his re-election campaign underway, President Trump is no doubt waiting for his shipment of ‘Make America Great Again’ hats to import from China. Meanwhile, fans of Greta Thunberg have created their own version of the controversial hats, replacing the ‘Great’ with ‘Greta’ in celebration of the 16-year-old Swedish climate change protester.
Last week, Greta delivered a gut-wrenching speech to UN leaders, of which Trump is the most influential, where she accused them of stealing her childhood and future with their pro-industrial capitalist agenda.
Fighting back tears, brave Greta said:
“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be in school on the other side of the ocean, yet you all come to us young people for hope.
How dare you? You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words and yet I’m one of the lucky ones.
People are suffering, people are dying, entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth.”
In response to this history-making polemic, Trump had only this to say in a tweet:
“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”
So in case you were wondering whether Trump’s bigotry ended at ridiculing teenagers with Asperger’s syndrome trying to help raise awareness about the damage that he and his Republican chums are doing to the planet with their insufferable climate change denial, it doesn’t.
But Greta has a thicker skin and a stronger resolve than the ‘Leader of the Free World’. Rather than mimicking Trump by arguing back or blocking him on Twitter, Greta simply reverse-trolled him by using his sentiments as the basis of her new Twitter bio:
As usual, the joke’s on Trump, with adoring fans of Greta basically paraphrasing Freddie Hayes from House of Cards with a solid ‘f*** you, “Mr President”‘.
The hats are being manufactured by Etsy user Johan Hansson, who is retailing them at £24.84 and has pledged to donate all proceedings to Greenpeace.
The description of the product reads:
“The little girl with the big heart vs. The big boy with the little brain.
100% of the profits from this cap goes to Greenpeace and their work to save the planet.
Available in two sizes with an elastic stretch band, this hat is a sure winner in comfort!
It has an athletic shape with a curved visor.”
It’s likely that the hats will sell out fast, so if you want one, get online sharpish.
But Trump has not been the only one to be reprimanded by the public for ridiculing Greta. Fox News has had to issue an apology after Michael Knowles, a political commentator for the right-wing Daily Wire, has been banned from appearing on the network again after calling Greta ‘a mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and the international left’.
I mean this is a guy whom fellow climate change denier Ben Shapiro regularly describes as ‘execrable’, so all in all, probably the right decision.
But there are those who agree with Trump and Knowles, so a group of comedians have created a satirical helpline for middle-aged gammon to rant called ‘The Greta Thunberg Helpline For Adults Angry At A Child’.
The video opens with a bloke saying:
“Hi, I’m a middle-aged man with an embarrassing problem. I get irrationally angry at a Swedish girl who wants to save the planet. Luckily, there’s now a number I can call.”
Greta has endorsed the video, retweeting it with a comment:
Perhaps President Trump should put Twitter aside for a moment and pick up the phone.
