Every year you get a high street chain putting on some sort of novelty for Valentine’s Day.
Last year it was Greggs (they’re probably doing it this year as well) where you could have a candlelit dinner over some Cordon Bleu, and presumably, a Steak Bake.
On the surface it seems like a complete joke, but when you think about it, a load of couples aren’t really into the whole consumerist charade that is Valentine’s Day, so it’s a good way of celebrating it while having a bit of a laugh.
Anyway, Poundland have taken this notion and come up with their own gimmick, as they’ve released a set of engagement rings just a month before the big day.
The ring comes nestled in a heart shaped velvet box, and the packaging reads, “Because we promise they’ll want to choose their own”.
And yes, you guessed it, it’s a quid.
Needless to say, the sight of a Poundland engagement ring divided opinion, with one person commenting on the Facebook group: “Because nothing says undying love like an engagement ring from Poundland.”
Another responded, “If anyone gets an engagement ring like that then they need a new boy/girlfriend”.
Others defended the idea, saying, “That’s actually not a bad idea” and “Brilliant idea, love the comment written on the box, definitely true for a lot of girls I reckon”.
Poundland have said the rings are available in a variety of colours are part of their new Valentine’s Day range, and give people the opportunity to propose “before they need to invest in the real rock.”
The high street store told the Press Association:
“These are beautiful placeholder rings because we know they’ll want to buy their own.
“We’re looking forward to the Poundland proposal becoming the way it’s done. Our bling ring is setting the scene for the real deal.”
I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a brilliant idea.
It’s almost like an IOU but for an engagement ring.
Incidentally, this is my first ever Valentine’s Day with someone. Should I purchase this?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
