Prince William is the first member of the Royal Family to speak publicly after the Oprah interview with Harry and Meghan.
The only previous acknowledgement was in the form of an official statement, released from Buckingham Palace.
It reads: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
It’s understood the palace had two days of crisis talks following the explosive interview with Oprah. It aired in the UK on Monday, and was watched by more than 11 million people.
Prince William spoke to reporters this morning and acknowledged the interview for the first time.
A reporter asked him if he has spoken to Harry since the interview. Prince William replied: “No I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do.”
The reporter continued: “Could you just let me know, is the royal family a racist family, sir?” William turned back and said “No, we’re very much not a racist family” before carrying on walking.
William spoke during a visit to an east London school with the Duchess of Cambridge this morning (Thursday). They were attending to mark children’s return to classes after homeschooling for the pandemic.
They are also talking about a mental health project for pupils which Kate launched in primary schools in 2018, and is now rolling out to secondary schools.
According to the Telegraph, royal aides insisted that William and Kate would not be answering questions about the interview.
“They won’t be answering questions and they’d rather you didn’t ask them. In a school environment it’s not appropriate,” one said.
Prince William And Kate
Harry and Meghan also talked about William and Kate during the interview with Oprah.
One of the key moments was where Meghan revealed it was actually Kate who had made her cry before the wedding. Much of the press had reported it was the other way around.
However, Meghan also told Winfrey she did not want to be “disparaging to anyone” and claimed Kate “owned it” and apologised with flowers and a note “to take accountability”.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry told Oprah he believes his brother and father are “trapped” as royals, and claimed that Prince Charles had stopped taking his calls for a time.
Prince Charles remained silent at his first public engagements since the Oprah revelations on Tuesday.
A ‘well-placed source’ told Vanity Fair: “I know he [Harry] has spoken to the Queen and he has been in regular email contact with his father.
“Depending on what he and Meghan say, this could be very damaging for family relations and possibly the nail in the coffin for his relationship with William, who is beyond livid over the interview.”
Another royal insider told the Daily Mail that Harry has pressed the “nuclear button on his own family”.
