It’s been 20 years since Anjelica Huston terrified us all as The Grand High Witch in the 1990 movie version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches, where the attendees of a conference transform unsuspecting children into rodents.
The film is back for 2020, with a whole new cast set to terrify children all over again. Stepping her square witch feet into the shoes of The Grand High Witch is Anne Hathaway. The jet-black bobbed wig of Anjelica’s version has been swapped for a platinum blonde, as Eva Ernst rules over the conference.
A long awaited trailer has been released:
The remake has been directed by Robert Zemeckis, who is best known for the Back to the Future trilogy and Forrest Gump. The remake appears to be staying true to the original plot, with witches attending a conference and plotting to “turn brats into rats” and destroy all of the children that are staying in the hotel.
The witches appear outwardly beautiful, but it is all magic, underneath which they are bald, with blue spit and square toes. Yum.
The boy and his grandmother at the heart of the story are being played by newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer. It also stars Kristen Chenoweth and Stanley Tucci.
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding when we can watch it in the UK at the moment, thank to COVID. It’s being released on HBO Max in the US on October 22nd, but that hasn’t launched on our shores yet so it is still intended to have a cinema release here.
Following the news of temporary closures of Cineworld this week, fans are waiting for Warner Bros to confirm their strategy for The Witches in the coming weeks.
