A few months ago, Jessiva Yaniv, a Canadian trans woman, filed human rights complaints against several waxing and aesthetic salon workers after accusing them of transphobic discrimination for refusing to wax her balls.
The tribunal heard that staff refused to perform the pubic hair removal procedure after she revealed she had a full set of male genitalia. It turned out Yaniv filed complaints against multiple beauty salons – claiming the aestheticians’ refusal to wax her scrotum was discriminatory.
Luckily, she lost every one of her cases after the tribunal rejected her claims.
The decision noted:
Human rights legislation does not require a service provider to wax a type of genitals they are not trained for and have not consented to wax.
It also found that Yaniv “engaged in improper conduct,” “filed complaints for improper purposes,” and concluded Yaniv’s testimony was “disingenuous and self-serving.” Finally, Yaniv was “evasive and argumentative and contradicted herself” while giving evidence. She was subsequently forced to pay the workers over the case- which saw one forced out of business as a result of Yaniv’s claim.
Right, you’re up to speed.
Now. given her behaviour, you’d think it’d be fair for her to face a little ridicule, which comedian Ricky Gervais duly obliged with.
He posted: “I was going to dress up as something weird and creepy for my Halloween party, but I’m bucking the trend this year and I’m going as brave female activist Jessica Yaniv.
“This also means I don’t have to wax my big old hairy balls.”
However, many weren’t impressed, calling him ‘bigoted’.
They tweeted: “Come Ricky. You’ve done some funny stuff over the years, but this is just odious and bigoted.”
Another posted: “Ricky Gervais if you wanna do transphobic jokes that’s fine, whatever, but can you at least try and come up with a new one.”
A third said: “Learning @rickygervais is transphobic is so disappointing.”
This prompted Ricky to delete the tweet and respond with the following:
Good to see Ricky not cave in this situation.
Just because he’s mocking one person – who just so happens to be trans – doesn’t mean he’s mocking transpeople or being transphobic.
People always forget that point.
However, in lighter Ricky Gervais news, After Life season 2 has officially wrapped.
In the video Gervais posted alongside the announcement, he said to the camera: “That’s a wrap on After Life 2!”
Everyone in the frame then let out a cheer, while Brandy the German Shepherd barked excitedly.
