Sharkboy and Lavagirl are coming back as Netflix are making a film that will see them as superhero parents.

It’s what the whole world has been wondering these last 15 years; what have that duo been up to? The Citizen Kane of superhero films needs a sequel and we’re finally getting one.

The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl walked so the MCU could run; that’s plain to see, but now they’re back and who knows? Maybe they’ll knock Marvel off their perch.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel

In this sequel called We Can Be Heroes – a line from a David Bowie song, similar to when he sung about the adventures of a Shark Boy and a Lava Girl – the duo will have a daughter, who has both shark and lava powers and I imagine hair that is somehow a cross between long and pink, and short and spiky.

Why did Lavagirl have pink hair? Why couldn’t they just be sensible and give her red or orange hair? Also, how does someone who can’t touch anything without setting it on fire go and have a baby with a shark man?

That’s neither here nor there apparently, as while it has been confirmed that Taylor Dooley will be returning as Lavagirl, it’s not yet certain if Taylor Lautner will be back as Sharkboy, though all signs are pointing to the conclusion that he will. Director Robert Rodriguez has described the upcoming film as a sort-of Avengers, but they all have kids.

He went on:

My most rabid fanbase all these years, by far, has been my kid films. My Spy Kids audience.

These kids watch those movies over and over because they’re action films made for children and families, in particular at a time when they need empowerment.

Netflix came to me because the Spy Kids movies had done just so well on their service. They said, ‘Could you make a series of films that do that?’ And I said, ‘I’d love to!‘”

Speaking of making the film during the pandemic, he explained:

It was the most challenging movie I’d ever done because, any director knows, the most challenging scene is like a dinner scene where you got a lot of people.

The whole movie I got 11 superhero kids in every shot. Trying to figure out how to film that was incredible.

It’s really challenging and exciting and I already shot it and was editing it when this happened.

I’m scoring it…we’re scoring it in Vienna, remotely, listening over here in the other room. I can’t be in the orchestra room as usual. They’re all sitting six feet apart in Vienna, it’s a wild time“.

Kept this under the radar pretty well, didn’t he? By all accounts, both Sharkboy and Lavagirl won’t be playing huge parts in the film, and it looks like it’s mostly done now.

Basically, expect small cameos.
