You’ve probably aged a lot over the last year, but prepare to feel even older. Shrek is officially 20 years old.

Yup, you read that right. The beloved Ogre first hit our screens in 2001. Believe it or not, 2001 was 20 years ago. Wow.

If you haven’t seen Shrek then stop reading now and GET OUT MA SWAMP because shame on you.

If you have seen Shrek then i’m sorry to have to break the horrifying news to you that it is in fact TWO DECADES old.

Fun Shrek Facts

  1. Chris Farley was originally set to play Shrek – not Mike Meyers. Unfortunately, Farley passed away in 1997. Before he died, he had already recorded 80 – 95% of his dialogue!
  2. Nicholas Cage was offered the role of Shrek, but he turned it down. When asked why he turned it down, Cage said “I just didn’t want to look like an ogre”.
  3. Mike Meyers originally gave Shrek a canadian accent, before resorting to the iconic Scottish one.

Shrek isn’t the only movie to turn 20, however. Here are some other iconic films that you won’t believe are celebrating their 20th birthdays this year:

Bridget Jones’s Diary

The ultimate British rom-com, which incidentally stars very american Renée Zellweger, turns 20 this year.

It premiered on 4 April 2001, and proved to be a huge success.

Even though this film was released 20 years ago, it is still as relatable as ever – though the smoking indoors is weird to watch now.

Nevertheless, Bridget is still very much a vibe.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

HOW can this be 20 years old?!

The iconic film in which Harry finds out he is a wizard and *spoiler alert* defeats he-who-must-not-be-named (again) was indeed released two decades ago.

To be fair, Rupert Grint did just have a baby with the girl from Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging, so it isn’t that surprising how old the first Potter film is.

Look how young they all look!

Legally Blonde

OhMiGod You guys! This film is 20 years old!?

That means you’re so old that bending and snapping carries a whole different meaning to you now.

Starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, this very pink, very feel good film is older than Billie Eilish.

I’m sure this will make you feel ancient, but fear not – your favourite gemini vegetarian is coming back to the big screen, as it’s been confirmed Legally Blonde 3 will be arriving in May 2022.

Many other iconic films are turning 20 this year including Monsters Inc., Zoolander and Spy Kids. It’s official – you’re getting old.
