Earlier this week, we reported that American singer John Legend had been declared People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive for 2019. Yep, it turns out that the 40-year-old Ordinary People singer John Legend isn’t so ordinary after all – so sayeth horned up America. John Legend joins the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Idris Elba as the 34th man to receive the title from the American publication.
The accolade is a pretty big deal to those in the spotlight – they get a cover, a few spreads, a tonne of free publicity and tongues wagging. I imagine it’s not too bad for their self-esteem, either.
Naturally, if you miss out on the top spot – or even the top 165 – it can be pretty disheartening if you’re a celeb looking for validation. Unless, of course, you make a complete mockery out of the whole thing and that’s exactly what America rapper Snoop Dogg did and people are f*cking loving him for it.
Plenty of people took to social media this week to dispute the decision that John Legend is indeed the sexiest man on Earth (I have thoughts on this – keep reading) right, including – in his own way – Snoop Dogg.
For no reason other than he is a bit of joker, the rapper took to Instagram to post a mock version of one of the covers where Legend is revealed as this year’s winner, and self-declares himself as the Sexiest Man Alive. Snoop Dogg posted Legend’s magazine cover with one immediately obvious change – his head instead of Legend’s.
Under the snap of his version of the coveted cover, Snoop Dogg wrote the caption:
“Thank. You 🤣👊🏿“
Snoop’s clearly just taking the p*ss here, but if you ask me, to actually seriously declare one individual as the sexiest person of their gender on the planet for one given year – as People does every year – errs on the side of dated and ridiculous. Whoever wins – no matter who they are, or what they look – is never going to appeal to the tastes of absolutely everyone on the planet. That’s just a fact. We’re all very different people with very different tastes and I think in 2019, accolades like this are a little eye-roll worthy and laughable – hence Snoop Dogg clearly laughing at it. It’s just not important.
That being said, John Legend is definitely to my tastes. So, if People is going to insist on spending the next few weeks posting endless shots of the singer climbing out of pools with shirts on, you’re not going to hear me complaining about.
