The first trailer for new spooky period drama series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels has finally dropped.
And just like that, I have a new horror obsession.
If you never watched the original Penny Dreadful (2014) series, then picture me totally jealous of you (my picture’s at the bottom of this article).
It was a treat of a supernatural period drama which ran for three glorious seasons, that saw the likes of Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton (James f**king Bond!) battling iconic Victorian horror legends like Dracula. It was epic. I mean Eva Green plays the same character she always plays, but literally nobody was complaining.
Fans will already know that the series has been revived and reimagined in 1930s L.A. for the upcoming Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The show features a brand-new cast and brand-new characters, separating it completely from the original 2014 series set in Victorian London (as far as we know so far).
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels comes from the same creative geniuses behind the original 2014 horror series – including original creator John Logan – and boasts just as stellar an A-list cast, including the likes of Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones, The Tudors), Nathan Lane (American Crime Story, Modern Family, The Good Wife) and horror legend Lin Shaye (Insidious series).
Late last year, it was revealed that Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer would be taking on the role of sexy demon, Magda, in City of Angels. First-look images of Magda channelling her inner demoness were released by Entertainment Weekly and Showtime in December, quickly bewitching fans new and old. Check them out here.
Here’s the official synopsis from the creators:
“A spiritual descendant of the original PENNY DREADFUL story set in Victorian-era London, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.”
“Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, this chapter will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop. PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS is a bold new vision that will employ all new characters and storylines.”
Natalie Dormer describes her demonic, shape-shifting character, Magda, to Entertainment Weekly Dormer as a “delicious, multidimensional thrill,” an “agent of chaos” who can “sow the seeds of disorder.”
“She’s fundamentally a skeptic of humanity. She says in the first episode, ‘I give human beings a choice, but they choose time and time again to be seduced by the more baser, selfish roles.’”
Look out for the series on Sky this spring.
