It’s safe to say all of us have fond memories of Steve Irwin, the Australian zookeeper and conservationist who brought us ‘The Crocodile Hunter’.

Years later, after Irwin’s tragic accident resulting in his death, son Robert Irwin is taking on an important role on behalf of his beloved father…

I’d imagine that all of us at some point remember snippets of The Crocodile Hunter, the show hosted by Irwin and his wife Terri that saw him wrangle with nature’s most terrifying beasts, in order to educate viewers in a way that most wildlife documentaries did from a distance.

On 4th September 2006 at the age of 44, Steve died tragically from a stingray injury to the heart. The accident occurred during a break in filming for the docuseries ‘Ocean’s Deadliest’, when Irwin was snorkelling in shallow waters attempting to film a stingray swimming away.

Initially it was thought he had only punctured a lung, but it was later revealed that he had taken a stab to the heart, which caused him to bleed to death. He was given CPR on board the crew member’s boat and rushed to nearby hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

He left a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin (born 24th July 1998) and a son Robert Clarence Irwin (born 1st December 2003), as well as his wife Terri.

Thirteen years after his death, Bindi has announced her forthcoming marriage to childhood boyfriend Chandler Powell in July next year, with the wedding to take place at Australia Zoo – which was founded by Bindi’s grandparents and made famous by her dad Steve.

What’s even more heart-warming is that she has asked younger brother Robert to walk her down the aisle, representing their father.

Speaking to PEOPLE, he said: “Oh, I was just so so stoked. I was so excited and really honoured for her to ask me to walk her down the aisle.

“I think it’s going to be such a wonderful day, such a great celebration. Chandler is absolutely perfect. I can’t fault him, he’s awesome.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight recently, Bindi said: “It’ll be really important that Robert walks me down the aisle.

“I’m always so grateful that Robert is there, and he has been such a big part of my life and he’s always stepped up and been the one to give me a hug when I need it and encourage me forward in life.

“So he will definitely be the one to walk me down the aisle when the time comes, and I think that will make it really special.”

I think it’s going to be such a wonderful day, such a great celebration. Chandler is absolutely perfect. I can’t fault him, he’s awesome.”

Robert also took to Instagram to share his happiness for the couple:

The siblings have also vowed to carry out their father’s legacy as wildlife warriors, protecting wildlife and educating others on how to do so.

Congratulations to Bindi and Chandler, who we’re sure will have the perfect wedding.
