Although ‘Friends’ has been finished for years, it continues to be talked about more than most contemporary shows.
Much of this is likely down to Netflix, who put all 10 series of the iconic sitcom on their streaming service before a ‘will-they-won’t-they’ take it off saga.
Thankfully, it’s staying for the time being, which means yet more precious time with the super six.
We’re all well aware of who they are by now: Ross, Rachel, Joey, Monica, Chandler and Phoebe, but have you ever wondered who the main protagonist is?
Well, data science (good ol’ science) has revealed the answer to that very question by examining factors such as the amount of lines and screen time of each character.
Blogger Yashu Seth found via examining the scripts of all 10 seasons that Ross and Rachel had the most lines – around 9,000 each – well ahead of the others.
However, in terms of screen appearances, Chandler came on top – although Ross and Rachel weren’t far behind – and Ross had the most number of individual screen appearances.
Rachel did come on top in terms of episode mentions, though only three ahead of Ross, making it a two-horse race between the couple.
The blogger therefore concluded that while it was close, the show’s main character was essentially Ross (as he edged her in the individual scene appearances).
Outside the six, the study found that, of course, Gunther had the most number of screen appearances, which is never a bad thing.
Imagine an episode of Gunthers.
Or even a city of Gunthers?!
That’s just Paris though, right?
